What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Spain? Barcelona? Madrid? Well, I assure that they are beautiful, but when you want to know "the real" Spain you must visit the community of Andalusia - south of Spain. Today I will focus on the city that will stay in my heart forever - Almería. Rather small city with less than 200 000 citizens.
What makes it so special? I would start with its architecture. Arabic culture made a huge impact on the city. Hidden gardens, huge palaces are often surrounded by "teterías" typical arabic coffeeshops. Every word that begins with "Al" comes from arabic. Just have a look at those buildings which represent mentioned above culture.
Another thing that I admire there are daily breaks called "siesta". Many shops and restaurants are closed during that time. It is due to temperature, which in summer can be around 40 Celsius degrees. During such a break we can enjoy our time with family while eating home lunch, take a nap or just simply drink a glass of beer. Yes, drinking during a break is totally legal, isn't it awesome? You can see basic "horario" schedule below :)
Food. Traditional tapas (small snacks with wine or beer included) are things that made that region popular. I have to add that 2019 is the year when Almeria receives title "Capital of gourmet". When visiting Almería don't forget to visit their market with natural fruits and vegetables. There you can try natural olives or "churros" with chocolate. Speaking about chocolate, my favourites dishes are always the ones containing a lot of sugar so have a look:
The last thing I want to mention is university and its surroundings. UAL is only 25 years old with great facilities nearby. You can enjoy newest architecture surrounded by green nature. When you turn around you are able to see Mediterranean Sea. Also there is posibility to go to the beach and rent a kayak. What can be better than studying in such a place?
As you can see small cities can be great also. They are interesting and less crowded than the popular ones. I hope I encourage you to go there. See you soon.
Love,
Angie
